Ben H. Winters is the author of of the New York Times bestselling Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, as well as the novels Android Karenina, Bedbugs, The Last Policeman, and two books for kids: Edgar Award nominee The Secret Life of Ms. Finkleman and The Mystery of the Missing Everything. Ben also writes plays and leads writing workshops for children and adults. He lives with his wife and three kids in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I expected the section with the real life cases to be interesting and motivating. Certainly she was forced to confront mortality, but as time went on and so did her life, what Hofmann struggled with most was the stigma and fear associated with HIV. I thought about his first book, that I had read a few years before, "Chalaça". The problems progress in difficulty as one continues. The resolution to both plotlines is a bit anti-climactic, though not without some emotional heft.

In the end, The Dark Water is a weaker book than its predecessor, but since The Well’s End closed on a cliffhanger, it’s hard to imagine anyone who enjoyed that book to stop there.
