reihanarobinson Reihana Robinson is a writer and artist and organic farmer living on the Coromandel in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Her writing has been published in the USA and New Zealand in a number of journals including Cha:An Asian Literary Journal, Landfall, Cutthroat, Hawai'i Review, Trout, Melusine, JAAM, Takahe, Cezanne’s Carrot and Blackmail Press. Her poems have appeared as part of AUP New Poets 3, Auckland University Press, 2008 and her first volume Aue Rona has been published by Steele Roberts, Wellington, NZ. (2012) She has also held artist residencies at the East West Center, Honolulu, Hawai'i and the Anderson Center, Red Wing, Minnesota. Artwork is held in collections in Europe, USA and the Pacific. She was the inaugural recipient of the Te Atairangikaahu Award for Poetry.

Hinz and his project to restore one of these P-51 planes piqued my interest, and curiosity led to my delving into the history of black American aviators.

Now, we have Von Hardesty's wonderful book Black Wings to describe this history, beginning with the barnstorming days of aviatrix Bessie Coleman and concluding with the highly specialized men and women of the Astronaut Corps. Unless parents or guardians help reinforce the message (from this book) in other ways, the message may not seep into the children.

The far as the illustrations are concerned, the book is wonderful with lots of colors and pictures all throughout. My take-away from this book is this: if we think of our personal world as bigger than just what's within our grasp, we can achieve so much more and with the benefit of adding value to the lives of others, we can forge those connections that in turn reinforce our lives and strengthen us as human beings.. My only complaint would be the written text on
